Support an Active Plan for Improving School Safety
The Newtown tragedy has parents seeking support for better security at the Elementary School. Many safety measures are being proposed, including maintaining a Police presence at the school.
Our nation’s schools should be safe havens for teaching and learning, free of crime and violence. Any instance of crime or violence at school not only affects the individuals involved, but also may disrupt the educational process and affect bystanders, the school itself, and the surrounding community. As per The National Center For Education Statistics Reports:
- 17 homicides and 1 suicide of school-age youth (ages 5–18) at school occured July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010
- In 2010, students ages 12–18 were victims of about 828,000 nonfatal victimizations at school
- In 2010 there were 470,000 reported thefts
- In 2010 there were 359,000 reported violent victimizations, 91,400 of which were serious violent victimizations
- In 2010, a greater number of students ages 12–18 experienced total victimizations (theft and violent crime) at school than away from school.
- In 2009 8% of students in grades 9–12 reported being threatened or injured with a weapon, such as a gun, knife, or club, on school property.
- In 2009–10, about 74 percent of public schools recorded one or more violent incidents of crime, 16 percent recorded one or more serious violent incidents.

Please think about what’s neccesary for the safety of schools in BCSD! All windows need to be bulletproof and metal detectors should be installed. Checking ID is simply not enough….

There needs to be a line of defense for the defenseless. Tradegies can be avoided, and due to the times we live in today, we must adapt ourselves to it in order to protect OUR children.

We definitely need more security in our schools! It’s way too easy these days to easily access our schools. I want my child safe and every other child safe and to feel safe. We should also look in to available training programs for teachers and staff to attend to help them be way better trained in how to handle a situations like these! Even if it saves a few lives with thes trainings, it’s worth it! If any one is interested I have a contact who teaches these classes.

The most amount of vulnerable people in one place each day is a school. It baffles me why someone would be against security!!! You lock your house and pay an alarm company to watch your house when you leave, why wouldn’t you set up security for your child? Is your child less important? Tell that to the Sandy Hook people and they’ll tell you about life changing needed security.

Inaction and a dismissive attitude are unacceptable when the safety of our children is involved. Though the issue is complex, the solution is action not assessment. Paul Harney POUND RIDGE, NY

An armed officer or an armed security guard would cost tax payers less then $2. Per tax payer. Lets demand it in the school budgets. We pay a lot more for a lot less.

The only way you can stop someone with a gun is to have someone whose is trained with another gun….that is a fact. So while we figure out “the why” and how to stop this from happening again lets have our kids protected not by security officer but by a police officer that is really trained. Our children cannot defend themselves…it is our job.

Cost is so minimal to put security at the front door. Think of it as insurance. The gunman wouldn’t of made it past the front door.

I cant even imagine who wouldnt want police at our schools, after what happened to those 20 little angels at Sandy Hook. We dont want this ever to happen again. Im sure that those parents were sending their kids to school thinking they were safe that day. Secrataries are to busy 1/2 the time answering phones and doing their job, to say 100 percent they are screening who is coming in the door.
Adele Stanley BEDFORD, NY
We need to have police in our school to protect what is the most important thing to us, which is our children. We need to reprioritize our resources and show our children that they are protected and will be safe. Having one teachers aide in the hallway buzzing people in through out the day is not the security our children need.

I adamantly support an armed security person as a last line of defense against anyone intent on harming the children or teachers. We cannot assume something bad may/may not happen.there is far too much at stake. The presence of security will deter intruders, and not frighten any of our young children. Hopefully the officer would never be called to action but we need to feel and BE SAFE. There is simply NO other option and it should be permanent.

There need to be security measure in place that would help to hinder such massacres that have occurred in the past. It cannot hurt.
Marisa Stark POUND RIDGE, NY
There is nothing more important than protecting our kids. Instead of sitting at the side of the road watching for speeders, the police should sit in front of the school and provide security for our children.
theresa Vita BEDFORD, NY
Our children must feel safe, We as parents should feel safe that our children ARE safe. Our children should feel safe because they ARE safe. No just told they are safe…..
